Abstract
The article discusses the USSR's decision to boycott the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and organize its own competing athletics competition. The boycott was a result of deteriorating relations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The USSR saw sporting achievement as an opportunity to demonstrate superiority over the Americans. The reasons for the boycott included concerns over commercial contracts, potential earthquakes, political tensions, and blocking of competitors. The Liberty Bell Classic was a track and field event held in the United States in 1984, organized as a rival competition to the Olympics in Moscow. The Friendship Games, held in Moscow, ran from July to September 1984 and featured various sports events. The USSR emerged as the top medal winner, but some results have been questioned due to doping allegations. The Friendship Games were considered a success by its organizers, promoting peace, cooperation, and understanding. [Extracted from the article]
