Abstract

The article focuses on the critical role of vaccination in shifting the global burden of disease from infectious to non-communicable diseases, highlighting successes such as the eradication of smallpox in 1977 and the dramatic reduction of polio cases since 1988. It discusses recent challenges to disease eradication efforts, including vaccine hesitancy fueled by mistrust, misinformation, and sociopolitical factors, which have contributed to outbreaks of polio and measles in under-vaccinated communities, exemplified by a 2022 case of vaccine-derived poliovirus in Rockland County, New York. The article emphasizes that sustained global health progress depends not only on scientific and medical advances but also on community engagement and trust in public health interventions.
