Abstract
Afghanistan boasts a rich and multifaceted history dating back to the pre-Islamic era. The country's strategic location at the crossroads of the Silk Road and Central Asia has bestowed upon it significant cultural and political significance over the course of millennia. Afghanistan's ancient history is intricately linked with Bactria, a pivotal cultural and political center during the Achaemenid era. This essay aims to explore Afghanistan's ancient history, with a particular focus on its association with Bactria, Alexander the Great, and the Achaemenid dynasty. In a further step it also analyzes modern-day Afghanistan, specifically under the Taliban regime, and the role of Iran from the Pahlavi dynasty (1979-1925) through the Islamic Republic.
