Abstract

The article focuses on the advocacy of U.S. Senator Charles Sumner for African American attorney John S. Rock in his pursuit for admission to the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. It shows the struggle of Rock to overcome obstacles facing people of color like him in attaining his ambition, his expression of the realities of racism and commendation for Sumner for his commitment to abolitionist principles, and the progress of the motion for Rock's admission to the bar in a conference of justices.
