Abstract

This article discusses three books that explore Africa-Soviet relations and the Soviet Union's support for African liberation movements against Western imperialism. "Arrested Development" examines the Soviet Union's efforts to disrupt economic links between Ghana, Guinea, and Mali and the West, promoting socialist principles. "Cold War Liberation" focuses on Soviet policy towards anticolonial movements in Lusophone Africa, emphasizing African agency in the collapse of the Portuguese Empire. "Russia in World History" challenges portrayals of Russia as an outlier and argues that its imperial experience is part of European empire. The article also explores various perspectives on imperialism and resistance, highlighting the rejection of the idea that empires can prosper at the expense of others and the environment. It examines the role of religion in feminism as a response to imperialism, compares Soviet Kazakhstan and British Kenya, and discusses the anti-imperial stances of Anna Politkovskaya and Arundhati Roy. The text provides a comparative historical model and contributes to understanding Africa-Soviet relations, empire, and imperialism. [Extracted from the article]
