Abstract

This essay examines the combination of hands and clothing (or lack thereof) on animals in Sir John Tenniel's illustrations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The hierarchical distinctions of characters in the narrative echo, distort, and question Victorian social classifications and mark Alice—a child—as distinct. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
