Abstract
The article reviews the 1976 BBC dramatisation of Robert Graves's novels "I, Claudius," highlighting its enduring appeal as a compelling portrayal of Roman imperial scandals during the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Adapted by Jack Pulman and directed by Herbert Wise, the series is noted for its inventive storytelling, studio-bound yet effective direction, and strong performances, particularly by Derek Jacobi as Claudius, Siân Phillips as Livia, and John Hurt as Caligula. The production is praised for its faithful yet creative adaptation of the source material and its showcase of stage-trained British acting, despite the limitations of 1970s television production techniques. The series remains significant for its dramatic depiction of political intrigue, family rivalries, and decadence in ancient Rome.
