Abstract

In 2023, three amateur codebreakers, Satoshi Tomokiyo, George Lasry, and Norbert Biermann, announced that they had deciphered a cache of encrypted letters dating back to the 16th century. The letters were written by Mary Queen of Scots during her six-year imprisonment by Queen Elizabeth I. The researchers used a homophonic cipher and identified the author through clues such as the mention of "freedom" and "my son," as well as the name Walsingham, who was a spymaster and secretary to Queen Elizabeth I. The discovery of these letters provides new insights into Mary's life in captivity and has been hailed as a significant find by historians. [Extracted from the article]
