Abstract

Tension between Ethiopia and Somalia continues to escalate, with unproductive talks held in Mogadishu in June. Ethiopia expressed interest in discussing a naval base and commercial port, disappointing their hosts. The Somali government accused Ethiopia of smuggling illegal weapons into Somalia, leading to a war of words between the two countries. Ethiopian troops have reportedly entered Somalia, and clashes between Ethiopian forces and al-Shabaab fighters have occurred. In other news, Chad and Libya have signed an agreement for the repatriation of Chadian nationals detained in Libya, and Sudan has recalled its ambassador to Chad amid tensions. Ethiopian militias have crossed into eastern Sudan and assaulted local farmers, and the area between Libya and Tunisia has been declared a closed military zone. Finally, Uganda denies allegations of encroaching into South Sudan's territory. [Extracted from the article]
