Abstract
The article focuses on the historical origins and development of the American Appaloosa horse breed, examining the cultural and genetic influences that shaped it. It challenges the widespread belief that the Nez Perce tribe originally developed the Appaloosa for warfare, instead presenting evidence that these horses were acquired through trade and interbreeding with horses brought by French-Canadian voyageurs and Spanish colonial expeditions. The article highlights the likely European ancestry of the Appaloosa, particularly from Baroque-era Bourbon horses bred in France and Spain, which were shipped to the Americas as fashions changed. It also discusses the complexities of coat color genetics, noting that appaloosa patterns may have appeared spontaneously or through various ancestral lines, and previews further exploration of spotted horses east of the Mississippi leading up to the formal establishment of the Appaloosa Horse Club in 1938.
