Abstract
The article explores Ukraine's unique nuclear history, emphasizing its significance beyond its past as part of the Soviet Union, particularly in light of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. It critiques the prevalent Russo-centric perspective in Western academia and highlights the contributions of Ukrainian scientists to nuclear research, particularly at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology. The discussion includes Ukraine's nuclear disarmament in the early 1990s, questioning the feasibility and implications of retaining its nuclear deterrent. Additionally, it addresses Ukraine's efforts to establish a civil nuclear energy regime post-Chernobyl, suggesting that a distinct Ukrainian narrative in nuclear history is both relevant and necessary.
