Abstract

It is prefaced with a useful family tree of the titular Huxleys, arising from "Darwin's Bulldog" Thomas Henry (TH) Huxley, and often considered part of the British "intellectual aristocracy." Bashford further shows that for all of these advantages, membership in the Huxley family conferred little protection against "maladies of thought" - TH's term to designate the severe melancholic episodes that periodically interrupted his own strenuous labors. A dustjacket blurb for this book asks why all history books can not share its "engaging intimacy of a novel", and indeed I The Huxleys i manifests many of the attractions and complexities of a novelistic family saga.
