Abstract

This article focuses on the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) refiling pay equity claims for its hospice and Plunket members following government legislation in May 2025 that canceled all existing claims and imposed stricter criteria. The claims represent about 1,550 members, primarily women, who provide critical care at the beginning and end of life. NZNO and affected nurses argue that their work is undervalued compared to comparable male-dominated occupations and emphasize the growing demand for community care due to an aging population. The government's law change freed up $12.8 billion for Budget 2025 but has faced legal challenges from NZNO and other unions, who contend the changes violate members' rights.
