Abstract
This article focuses on a 7-CD compilation of Rachel Podger's recordings of Antonio Vivaldi's concertos, spanning 20 years and released by Channel. The set includes Vivaldi's Opus 3, 4, and 9 (each containing 12 concertos), as well as the Four Seasons and three additional concertos, performed with period ensembles Arte dei Suonatori, Holland Baroque, and Brecon Baroque. Podger, a noted baroque violinist known for her precise and expressive playing, delivers interpretations that are bright, accurate, and stylistically restrained, with notable performances of the Christmas concerto Il Riposo and the technically demanding Grosso Mogul. The recordings feature varied continuo instruments and mostly small ensembles, with the final disc uniquely employing a one-on-a-part orchestra.
