Abstract
For French colonial soldiers, the Second World War was bookended by notorious episodes of racist violence and summary execution. Indeed, Frank identifies a critical period between the French defeat and the Allied landing in North Africa when captivity offered a measure of state solicitude towards colonial prisoners that had long been denied French colonial subjects.
