Abstract
This article delves into the history and importance of Puerto Rico's national anthems. Despite being under Spanish and later American rule, Puerto Rico has had unofficial anthems that reflect its intricate identity. The original anthem, La Borinqueña, was a call for autonomy and regional pride. As time went on, new songs like Lamento Borincano and Preciosa emerged to fill the void left by the modification of La Borinqueña. These anthems represent Puerto Rico's struggle for independence and resistance against colonialism. The article explores the history and significance of several unofficial anthems, including "La Borinqueña," "Preciosa," "Que Bonita Bandera," and "Verde Luz." These songs have played a crucial role in expressing Puerto Rican national identity and resistance against colonial control. The article discusses the cultural and historical context in which these anthems emerged, highlighting their use as symbols of pride, subversion, and unity. It also addresses the ongoing debate over Puerto Rico's national anthem status and the complex sociopolitical existence of the island. [Extracted from the article]
