Abstract
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the life and accomplishments of Sir Charles Algernon Parsons, a prominent engineer from the United Kingdom. It focuses on his invention of the marine steam turbine, which had a significant impact on ship propulsion during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The article also highlights Parsons' creation of the steam yacht Turbinia, which served as a demonstration of his invention's capabilities. The yacht underwent several modifications, including the installation of three axial-flow steam turbines, making it the fastest ship in the world at the time. The success of Turbinia led to the widespread adoption of steam turbine propulsion in British warships and merchant vessels. Today, the yacht is exhibited at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.
