Abstract
This article focuses on the 1959 film adaptation of George Gershwin’s opera *Porgy and Bess*, directed by Otto Preminger and featuring a notable cast including Dorothy Dandridge, Sidney Poitier, and Sammy Davis Jr. Despite the opera’s enduring popularity on stage, the film version has largely disappeared from public view, partly due to production challenges, mixed critical reception, and alleged efforts by Gershwin’s family to suppress it. The story centers on the tragic romance between Porgy, a disabled Black beggar, and Bess, a woman caught in a cycle of addiction and abuse, set in Charleston’s fictional Catfish Row. While praised for its musical performances, the film has been criticized for its lack of authenticity and directorial detachment, and it remains difficult to access today, reflecting complex issues in mid-20th-century Hollywood portrayals of Black life.
