Abstract

The article reviews *Superstorm 1950*, a book that examines the Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950, focusing on its meteorological characteristics and societal impacts across the eastern United States. The book is structured into three sections covering the storm's origins, its multifaceted effects—including heavy snow, ice, wind, and cold—and its broader significance for meteorology and society. It highlights how social factors such as race, gender, and class influenced vulnerability during the storm and offers a formal definition of a "superstorm" as a midlatitude cyclone causing record meteorological hazards and significant societal damage over a large area. While accessible and rich in firsthand accounts, the book's analysis of social issues and modern implications is limited, making it suitable as a supplementary resource for those studying weather-related disasters and human–environment interactions.
