Abstract
The article focuses on the experiences and challenges faced by Polish pioneers migrating to Canada from the late 19th century through the post-Second World War period. Early Polish immigrants, primarily peasants fleeing poverty, were recruited to settle and farm the Canadian prairies, often facing harsh conditions, isolation, and exploitation despite government promises of fertile land and prosperity. After World War II, Canada admitted Polish veterans, particularly from Anders' Army, to replace German prisoners of war in agricultural labor, but these veterans endured poor treatment, low wages, and social suspicion. The article highlights the evolution of Polish migration to Canada, noting that today over one million Canadians claim Polish ancestry, contrasting past hardships with modern, streamlined immigration processes.
