Abstract

This article focuses on Marvin Gaye’s 1971 album *What’s Going On*, a landmark soul record that addressed social and political issues such as the Vietnam War, racial injustice, and environmental concerns, marking a departure from Motown’s typical feel-good sound. Inspired by his brother’s experiences in Vietnam and social unrest at home, Gaye crafted the album as a concept work reflecting the era’s turmoil, with tracks that flow together to form a cohesive narrative. Despite initial skepticism from Motown founder Berry Gordy, the album became a commercial and critical success, influencing generations and frequently cited as one of the greatest albums of all time. The article also recounts Gaye’s tragic death in 1984, when he was fatally shot by his father, highlighting the contrast between his message of peace and the violence surrounding his life.
