Abstract

The article focuses on the historical significance of the bell from HMCS Alberni, a Canadian Flower-class corvette that served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Commissioned in 1941, Alberni performed convoy escort and anti-submarine duties in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and English Channel, including participation in the Normandy landings. The ship was sunk in August 1944 by a German U-boat using advanced stealth technology, resulting in significant loss of life. The Juno Beach Centre, a museum dedicated to Canadian WWII history, recently acquired Alberni’s bell and shipbuilder’s plate and is seeking donations for their restoration and preservation.
