Abstract

A recent archaeological discovery in Guatemala has revealed evidence of a ritual conducted by the ancient Maya to erase the memory of past rulers. The remains of burnt bones and ornaments belonging to Maya royalty were found in a pyramid at the Ucanal site, dating back 1200 years. The burning event reflects a time of political turmoil that eventually led to the collapse of the Classic Maya era in the region. The researchers suggest that this ritual was a symbolic act marking a new political era and hope that further research will reveal the identities of the burnt royals. [Extracted from the article]
