Abstract
The article focuses on a story Jean Calas was a merchant in France who was falsely accused of killing his son and sentenced to death by the judge, Antoine Louis de Beaudrigue It mentions Calas maintained his innocence and refused to confess. It also mentions Voltaire, a French Enlightenment writer and philosopher, took up Calas' cause and wrote "Traité sur la tolérance" to protest against the injustice and Calas was eventually exonerated a year later.
