Abstract
The article focuses on the Bloomer Costume, a 19th-century women's dress reform inspired by Amelia Bloomer and her advocacy for practical clothing to promote women's social equality. Originating from a design worn by women in a Swiss sanatorium, the costume combined Turkish-style trousers with a knee-length skirt, allowing greater freedom of movement compared to restrictive corsets and crinolines. Despite ridicule and opposition from the press and clergy, the Bloomer Costume became a symbol of feminist ideals and helped advance the women's rights movement in the United States during the 1850s. Ultimately, the costume fell out of favor as other fashion innovations emerged, and activists shifted focus toward broader issues of women's education, employment, and suffrage.
