Abstract

The article examines Kubrick's use of silence in the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey" through scientific purity, its lack of reliance on dialogue as a storytelling device, and the ability to evoke fear. Topics include the role of silence in cinema redefined by Kubrick, his esthetic approach to sound, and one of the many ways in which Kubrick elevates the science fiction genre by avoiding the use of playful sound effects.
