Abstract
The article focuses on a study examining the motivations behind participation in the Indonesian riots of May 1998, which targeted the ethnic Chinese minority. Conducted through semi-structured interviews with 31 participants involved in violent acts, the research identified motivations at three levels: intergroup (ethnic prejudice), intragroup (conformity), and individual (thrill-seeking, greed). The findings revealed that most participants cited intragroup and individual motivations, with conformity being a common factor among all. The study highlights the complex psychological and social dynamics that drive collective ethnic violence. [Extracted from the article]
