Abstract
The article presents a roundtable discussion among historians David Blight, Drew Gilpin Faust and Stephanie McCurry to address concerns about the place of Civil War within the field of U.S. history. Topics include the competing interpretations of the Gettysburg Address as wartime rhetoric, debates over the freedom narrative and the persistence of white supremacy, the artificial divide between Civil War military history and Reconstruction scholarship and the field's relevance to racial politics.
