Abstract

Eric Alterman's book, "We Are Not One," provides a cultural history of the arguments surrounding Israel and Palestine in the United States since 1948. Alterman, a liberal journalist, offers insights into U.S. foreign policy towards Israel and the Middle East, including President Richard Nixon's antisemitism and the U.S. government's support for Israel's military. The book focuses on debates mainly among Jews on the left side of the political spectrum, with Alterman expressing his own disaffection towards Israel and its passionate supporters in the United States. While the book offers informative and amusing accounts, it also reflects Alterman's shifting position and tensions within his critical history. Alterman criticizes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement aimed at Israel, but also acknowledges the use of the term "apartheid" in discussing Israel's rule over Palestinians. Overall, "We Are Not One" provides a valuable source of knowledge on the U.S. politics of Israel. [Extracted from the article]
