Abstract

This article provides an overview of the House Judiciary Committee's approval of articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon in 1974. The committee, consisting of 36 men and two women, debated and voted on various articles, with the first three focusing on domestic crimes related to the Watergate scandal. These articles accused Nixon of obstructing justice, misusing his authority, and defying subpoenas. The committee also considered an article related to Nixon's false statements about American bombing operations in Cambodia during the Vietnam War, but this article was ultimately rejected. The article explores the significance of the Watergate scandal and the controversy surrounding the Vietnam War during this period. It highlights the debate surrounding Article IV, which focused on Nixon's secret bombing campaign in Cambodia. Some committee members argued that Nixon's actions were justified in the context of the war, while others believed he should be held accountable for violating Congress' constitutional right to make decisions about going to war. Ultimately, Article IV was not approved, and this decision shaped how the events of that time have been remembered. [Extracted from the article]
