Abstract

The article traces painter Chath PierSath's early life in Cambodia, depicting how political upheaval, war and the Khmer Rouge regime violently stripped him of family, home and identity. Topics include his childhood connection to the land, the devastation of U.S. bombing and civil conflict and the brutal indoctrination, labor and separation enforced by the Khmer Rouge.
