Abstract

This article focuses on a recording of Igor Stravinsky’s late serial compositions, including *Threni*, *Requiem Canticles*, and several shorter sacred and memorial works, performed by Cappella Amsterdam, the North Netherlands Orchestra, and soloists under conductor Daniel Reuss. These pieces, composed during Stravinsky’s final years, reflect his disciplined use of twelve-tone serialism as a spiritual and formal practice. While the performances are praised for their expressiveness and technical skill, the music itself is described as austere, ritualistic, and at times difficult to engage with emotionally. The recording also features Stravinsky’s arrangement of two sacred songs by Hugo Wolf, noted for their lyrical warmth and contrast to the composer’s own serial works. [Extracted from the article]
