Abstract
This article provides a brief overview of key events that occurred during October 1944 in World War II. The Battle of Aachen concluded with the capture of the city by US forces after 39 days of intense urban combat. The Battle of Leyte Gulf saw the first organized kamikaze attacks by the Imperial Japanese Navy, resulting in the sinking of the USS St Lo. The Allies' airborne assault known as Market Garden allowed them to advance into the Netherlands and liberate cities, but also led to revenge attacks by citizens and resistance members against collaborators. General Erwin Rommel, implicated in the assassination attempt on Hitler, died by suicide and was given a state funeral. The Philippines Campaign began with the Battle of Leyte, where General Douglas MacArthur made a radio broadcast announcing his return. [Extracted from the article]
