Abstract

Pompey the Great, a prominent Roman general, constructed Rome's first theatre in 55 BC as a grand display of his political and military achievements. The theatre, located in the Campus Martius, was a lavish structure with a seating capacity of 15,000 and elaborate decorations. Pompey's theatre served as a center for popular entertainment, showcasing events such as wild beast combats and theatrical performances. Despite its grandeur, the theatre also raised concerns about the use of extravagant entertainment to pacify the Roman people, as highlighted by the poet Horace. [Extracted from the article]
