Abstract

This article focuses on an interview with Robert Pinsky, a three-time U.S. Poet Laureate and prominent contemporary American poet, discussing his poetic formation, the role of poetry in contemporary culture, and its place in education. Pinsky emphasizes poetry as a vocal art accessible to all, highlighting his Favorite Poem Project, which encourages public engagement with poetry through readings and educational resources. He critiques the marginalization of poetry in university education and stresses the importance of experiential learning in schools, advocating for teachers to foster direct interaction with poems’ sounds and rhythms rather than prioritizing analysis. Pinsky also reflects on the democratic and diverse cultural context of American poetry and the challenges and opportunities this presents for poetry education.
