Abstract

This article discusses the mysterious disappearance of Daniel O'Connell's heart after his death in 1847. O'Connell was a prominent politician in Ireland known for his work on Catholic Emancipation. After his death, his embalmed heart was brought to the Irish College in Rome and placed in an urn in the church crypt. However, in 1851, the church was partially demolished and the heart's location became uncertain. The fate of the heart remains a mystery, with questions about whether it was stolen or still remains in the crypt. Irish artist Claire Halpin recently created a plaster cast of a heart to symbolically represent O'Connell's lost heart and donated it to the church. [Extracted from the article]
