Abstract

This article explores the author's experience of teaching their children about the Young Lords, a Puerto Rican freedom movement, during the pandemic lockdown. The Young Lords fought against displacement, poverty, and police brutality in Chicago in the late 1960s. The author organized virtual discussions and events to learn and share about the Young Lords' history, and even created a curriculum for a summer youth camp. The article emphasizes the importance of studying and understanding the Young Lords' transformation and their role in the broader history of youth of color in Chicago. The text also discusses the creation of a curriculum that aims to educate students about the history and activism of the Young Lords organization in Chicago during the 1960s. The curriculum includes lessons on Puerto Rican migration, civil rights movements, and the impact of the Young Lords on their communities. The curriculum was piloted by teachers and received positive feedback, highlighting the significance of ethnic studies in education. The author emphasizes the need for safe spaces for educators to learn and grow, and the power of individual knowledge in inspiring young people. [Extracted from the article]
