Abstract
The article reviews three major events that shaped Sweden’s national discourse in 2025: the deadliest mass shooting in modern Swedish history at an adult education center in Örebro, the murder of Salwan Momika—an Iraqi-born man known for publicly burning Qur’ans—and the prosecutor’s decision not to reopen the investigation into the 1986 assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme. The mass shooting, which killed eleven people including the gunman, challenged assumptions about public safety and sparked debate on gun control and lone-actor violence. Momika’s killing intensified discussions on freedom of expression, hate speech, and religious sensitivity amid ongoing threats linked to his provocative acts. Finally, despite growing doubts about the evidence against the previously identified suspect in Palme’s murder, authorities reaffirmed the case’s closure, highlighting unresolved tensions around justice and collective memory in Sweden.
