Abstract
The McClelland Royal Commission in 1984 exposed the truth about the humanitarian crisis caused by British nuclear testing in Maralinga, Australia. The British began testing nuclear weapons in Australia in 1951 without informing the public until 1952. The Traditional Owners of the land, including the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands and settled elsewhere. The Royal Commission revealed that around 1200 First Nations people were exposed to radiation during the testing, leading to health issues and deaths. Yami Lester, a Yankunytjatjara Elder, was permanently blinded by the radioactive fallout and spent his life advocating for compensation and the cleanup of uranium-contaminated lands. The Royal Commission also investigated the deliberate exposure of service personnel to radioactive fallout. Overall, the report criticized the British government's disregard for the welfare and safety of Aboriginal people and the inadequate resources allocated for their well-being.
