Abstract

The article examines the East Asian folkloric figure of the shape-shifting fox spirit and its enduring evolution from ancient mythology to contemporary literature, film, television, and popular culture. Topics include the fox spirit's shifting moral spectrum between amorality, villainy, and self-sacrifice; its gendered, philosophical, and transhuman implications; and its adaptation across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultural traditions.
