Abstract
This article examines the relationship between social privacy concerns and user engagement in mobile health applications (mHealth apps), using communication privacy management (CPM) theory as a framework. Based on an online survey of 1,149 Chinese mHealth app users, the study finds that social privacy concerns negatively affect user engagement, with perceived privacy partially mediating this effect. Additionally, perceived control over personal information moderates this relationship by reducing the negative impact of social privacy concerns on perceived privacy, thereby encouraging greater engagement. The findings highlight the importance for app developers and health professionals to implement nuanced privacy management strategies that address users' privacy concerns to promote sustained and active participation in mHealth platforms.
