Abstract
This article focuses on the sociolinguistic and phonetic study of the articulation of the coda /s/ in Granada, Spain, based on data collected between 2020 and 2023 as part of the PRESEEA project (Proyecto para el Estudio Sociolingüístico del Español de España y de América). The research confirms that elision (deletion) of the coda /s/ is the predominant variant (68%) across social groups in Granada, followed by aspiration (30.7%), with minimal retention or assimilation. Linguistic factors such as consonant context, syllable number, grammatical and functional categories, as well as extralinguistic factors like education level and gender, influence the choice of variant. The study also compares current findings with earlier data from 2007–2009, showing continuity in the preference for elision despite ongoing phonetic convergence with central peninsular Spanish in other areas.
