Abstract

The article discusses a study on the Latvian language and its teaching within diaspora communities, focusing on learner agency in Latvian heritage language (LAT-HL) education. Conducted by researchers from the University of Latvia, the study highlights that approximately 1.5 million people speak Latvian, with a significant number residing outside Latvia. The research, based on data from four Latvian diaspora schools across Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia, identifies two thematic groups related to student agency: language management in LAT-HL lessons and student engagement in the learning process. The findings emphasize the influence of teaching methodology, classroom roles, and student choice on learner agency. [Extracted from the article]
