Abstract

This text focuses on Otso Kortekangas's book *Language, Citizenship and Sámi Education in the Nordic North, 1900-1940*, which examines educational policies affecting the Sámi, an Indigenous people inhabiting Sápmi across northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The book analyzes how language and citizenship were intertwined in early 20th-century schooling, highlighting differing national approaches: Norway and Finland pursued assimilation through majority languages, while Sweden implemented a segregated "nomad school" system that combined preservationist and assimilationist elements. Kortekangas provides a comparative historical account emphasizing the complexities of Sámi teachers' roles and the tensions between resistance and compliance within educational policies. The work contributes to understanding minority education and Indigenous experiences in the Nordic region during a formative period.
