Abstract
3 In early editions, only a semicolon is used to distinguish or separate senses, while in later editions, numbers and letters are used to do so. 4 By the time the trial edition of MCD was published in 1960, the COD was already in its 4th edition (1951), there also were several similar monolingual general-purpose dictionaries which could be referenced worldwide. According to [25]: 127) lexicographic archeology 'consists in the comparison of different editions of the same dictionary, of different dictionaries derived from a common source, or different dictionaries from the same publisher'. These asymmetries could easily cause the impression for readers that the relevant editions of COD have few problems in the treatment of certain elements, while the relevant editions of MCD have more problems.
