Abstract
Oil companies have chosen not to participate in a US government auction for drilling rights in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge due to declining industry interest in the region. This lack of interest highlights the legal, social, and economic challenges associated with drilling in the area, despite estimates of significant crude oil reserves. Environmentalists and native Alaskans, including the Gwich'in people, have expressed concerns about the potential impact of oil and gas development on the pristine wilderness and wildlife in the refuge. The failed auction has raised questions about the feasibility and desirability of pursuing oil exploration in the Arctic region. [Extracted from the article]
