Phil Jaggar - known in northern Nigeria as I Malam Bala i - was a leading Hausaist of his generation. In addition to his major focus on Hausa, Jaggar also conducted research on Guruntum, a small West Chadic language that was the mother tongue of Andrew Haruna, his PhD student at the time.
