Abstract

The article focuses on the history and development of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, highlighting its unique dry climate caused by a rain-shadow effect from the Coastal Mountains. It outlines the region's human history, beginning with the syilx (Okanagan) people's seasonal use of the land, followed by European fur traders in 1811, cattle ranching in the late 19th century, and a shift to fruit-growing in the early 1900s. Concerned about preserving this history, Leonard Norris founded the Okanagan Historical and Natural History Society in 1925 to document the valley's diverse cultural and natural heritage. Since then, the society has published numerous reports chronicling the region's history, with ongoing contributions from historians across British Columbia.
