Abstract

The article focuses on a quality-improvement project evaluating depression screening tools adapted for Haitian Creole-speaking populations in Gainesville, Florida. Researchers found that the English version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) may not effectively assess depression due to cultural and linguistic differences. The study compared the culturally adapted Haitian Creole PHQ-9 and the Zanmi Lasante Depression Symptom Inventory (ZLDSI) with the English PHQ-9 among 50 Haitian adults, revealing that the adapted tools were more sensitive in detecting depression symptoms. The findings suggest that nurse practitioners should utilize these culturally responsive screening tools to better identify and refer Haitian immigrants at risk for depression.
