Abstract

A study conducted by the University of Kansas Medical Center focused on developing an automated feedback IOS application called SPEEKO for Elderspeak to provide point-of-care feedback on staff communication with dementia patients. The app analyzed staff speech for elderspeak diminutives, common in communication that sounds like babytalk, and compared its accuracy with manual transcription by trained coders. The research found significant associations between the app's identification of diminutives and manual transcription for certain terms, suggesting the potential of the app to promote implementation of effective communication skills in dementia care.
